COLD VS. FAT
Liposuction is the second-most popular type of plastic surgery in the United States, but it’s facing what could be tough new competition.
The challenger to lipo is Zeltiq (pronounced Zel ‘teek), a device that fights fat by exposing it to cold temperatures.
It’s a non-invasive alternative for patients who otherwise would consider going into the operating room to get anesthetized and have pockets of unwanted fat sucked out through a tube.
In a limited number of clinical trials conducted so far, patients have averaged about a 22 to 25 percent reduction in fat in love handles and abdomen.
“It chills the fat to about 5 degrees Centigrade. This is enough to cause frozen crystalline formation within the fat cells, ” said Dr. Christopher Zachary, chairman of the UCI Department of Dermatology. “Keep them like this for 30-60 minutes and this induces ‘programmed cell death’ a gradual process whereby the fat cells just quietly disappear.”
“It’s essentially painless, non-invasive, and predictable, ” he said. No anesthesia is needed.
The body removes the dead fat cells over a period of two to six weeks.
One of Zachary’s recent Zeltiq patients was Dr. John Heydt, president of UCI medical center’s doctor group, University Physicians and Surgeons.
“The results are pretty remarkable, ” Heydt said two months after his one 60-minute Zeltiq treatment. He estimates that he has seen a 75 percent reduction in his left love handle, which Zachary treated, compared to the right one, which was left untouched for now.
The treatment process involved lying on a clinical table for an hour, working through his email at a portable device with a vacuum-like suction cup attached to his side.
During the procedure, he felt no pain, Heydt said. For a week or two afterward, that part of his body felt “almost like a sunburn, ” he said.
The key to the Zeltiq technique is the fact that skin cells can stand colder temperatures than fat cells can. The device lowers temperature of both skin and fat, reaching a temperature at which fat cells die and skin cells are spared.

Oh and ALSO: ANyone with Knee and/or Calf
In my interviews of surgeons, some say they do not perform calf liposuction or inner thigh lipo suction because of the lengt of recovery time or that it is to complicated.
I googled it and can't find much info. Does anyone here have experience having their calves lipo'd ? How long/painful was the recovery?
One last thing: did anyone here end up with permenent swelling in the limb (lymphedema) due to lipo?
Thanks SO SO much!
